We are pleased to be showcasing our youngest artist in the gallery for the month of May 2021. Carys produces some amazing seascapes using mixed media, as well as stunning wildlife and pet portraiture in watercolours. Having received a portrait of my two cats for my 40th birthday, I was amazed at how Carys is able to capture their personality on paper! Carys\' work will be displayed at the gallery for the full month of May, and she will be spending the day at the gallery on Saturday 1st May, so come and say hello!

About the Artists

CARYS AVERY WELSH creates partially abstract acrylic landscapes typically depicting the sea or a body of water that aim to subvert the stereotypical picturesque depiction of seascapes and in turn challenge the audience. Carys typically uses a palette knife rather than a brush as she finds it allows for a more textured end-result. Her paintings establish a link between the landscape’s reality and that imagined by its observer. Carys does this by abstracting the fundamentals of seascapes and creating something that is obscure, solitary, and sometimes uninviting which offers its audience the opportunity to respond rationally to what is depicted. In some instances, there is no reference to any recognisable form; she relies on the texture and shape of the palette marks which allows the possible interpretations to be widened. This uncertainty forces the viewer to draw interpretations determined by their own personal experiences.
